Seek Help Through Patience and Prayer

In the name of Allah (The One). I send the peace and blessings upon His messenger (Al-Mustafa) and upon His messenger’s family, companions, and those who follow him in righteousness until the Day of Judgement (Yowm Al-Qiyaamah). To proceed:

Allah said in the Qur’an,

“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2) : 153

Imam At-Tabari brings, in his explanation of this verse, a narration that Ja’far said:

“This verse is an exhortation from Allah ta’ala (the high) to be obedient to Him and the possibility of adversity upon oneself and one’s wealth in striving for this obedience. Allah said,

“O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2) : 153

In other words: by being obedient to Me, fulfilling those things I have made obligatory, submitting to that which I have commanded you with at the time it becomes obligatory upon you, fighting for the sake of Allah[1]. Be patient in Me with what you dislike and calamities, persevering during difficulty, and pray to Me [for salvation] from that which you dread. For indeed with being patient upon those things you dislike, you achieve My pleasure. With prayer you will be successful with those things you ask for and I will fulfill all of your needs, because I am with the patient, those who uphold their religious obligations and leave off sin. I will make them successful and happy until have that which they requested and hoped for previously.

[1] TN: Fighting in the cause of Allah, or Jihad, has many conditions to it; many of which we are not able to fulfill in presently in our time. Thus, it is not for us to wage war against anyone unless done properly while being able to fulfill all of Jihad’s conditions. Nevertheless, Jihad An-Nafs (fighting one’s desires) is still a Jihad that we all can do. May Allah aid us all in fighting our desires and make us from those whom he loves in this life and the next, ameen.

And the peace and blessings are upon our prophet Muhammad, upon his family and companions.
